What are the qualities that distinguish an AFSOC Airman - from those who would be considered "average"?

What factors will make peers and leaders alike respect you as a leader, warrior - and critical member of the Air Commando team?

From Lieutenant General Eric E. Fiel
Commander
Air Force Special Operations Command

AFSOC has a long, distinguished and proud history. Legendary Air Commando commitment rises from a heritage of immeasurable sacrifices made across generations by strong, committed people.  AFSOC is a relatively small family - so the loss or degraded performance of even one member can have a profound impact on our mission.  Thus, our people become known by their commitment, sound decisions and wise actions.

Beginning in 2005, nearly 200 experienced and highly-respected AFSOC Air Commandos were asked about the personal qualities that distinguish our elite AFSOC Airmen from those simply considered "average." These 13 qualities result in peers and leaders alike respecting you as a leader, warrior and valued member of the Air Commando team. Understand that when I reference Air Commandos in this context, I am speaking about a type of person - not an AFSC or job. Regardless of your job title or where you work, only your peers - and others who know you well - will know if you exemplify the passion, commitment, maturity and leadership that distinguish the "Warrior" or "Commando."

All the jobs our Airmen accomplish, whether SOF or non-SOF support, are crucial to AFSOC success. What makes an Air Commando is a person's heart and their personal determination to apply these 13 critical attributes to their daily life - both on and off duty. Thus, leaders and followers alike should ensure these features are central in our vision of AFSOC service.

The attributes are not really a surprise, but they nonetheless require daily vigilance and courage. According to our most experienced and respected enlisted and officer leaders, the qualities that distinguish an elite AFSOC Air Commando are:

Integrity
Self-Motivation
Effective Intelligence
Self-Discipline
Perseverance
Adaptability
Maturity
Judgment
Selflessness
Leadership
Skill
Physical Fitness
Family Strength

These 13 Critical Attributes are also the elements of individual member success in AFSOC. They are important vectors for members entering AFSOC service, and they reflect essential characteristics that will help ensure an Airman's success over time. Our most experienced warriors already know these are the specific qualities we recognize, value, and respect in our most elite Air Commando team members. These 13 Critical Attributes are fundamental to our mission success and to the continuation of AFSOC's heritage of strength, honor and selfless service to our nation.
