FDshp pa offering sNew primary care option in SPA program addresses shortage By 2020, the United States will be short 45,000 primary care doctors, especially in rural areas, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. The need for specialty physicians may top 46,000. To help address that looming care gap, UAB's Surgical Physician Assistant (SPA) program in the School of Health Professions is adding a primary care option for incoming students.

"Physician assistants, with their generalist education, commitment to team-based practice and relatively short training, are ideally positioned to address both the short- and long-term needs of the nation," says Patricia Jennings, DrPH, PA-C, director of the SPA program.

FDuab band sMarching Blazers win International Band Competition in Ireland  What do you get when you take a band of Blazers to Limerick on St. Patrick's Day? Answer: A crystal bowl. Under a smiling Irish sky on Monday, the 120-strong Marching Blazers paraded through the city made famous in rhyme, taking first place in the International Band Competition. In a contest against 17 other bands from Germany, Canada, Italy and the United States, the Marching Blazers belted out the UAB fight song, "Land of 1,000 Dances" and "Can You Feel It," earning high-fives from a raucous crowd that was five- to ten-people deep along the parade route.

"When we reached the grandstand, we stopped before the lord mayor of Limerick and other local dignitaries for a standstill performance, getting the crowd to clap along, before moving on to finish the parade," says Director Sue Samuels, Ph.D.
