‘Durable’ Brigade assumes responsibility

Story by: Sgt. V. Michelle Woods
1ST SUST. BDE. PUBLIC AFFAIRS

The 1st Sustainment Brigade, 1st Infantry Division assumed command of sustainment operations in Afghanistan during a transfer of authority ceremony Oct. 6 at Bagram Airfield.

Task Force Durable is now responsible for providing logistical support to coalition units throughout regional commands East, North and Capital, in addition to synchronizing and executing the movement of retrograde equipment throughout the regions.

"We provide support through the oversight and movement of all classes of supply, from food and fuel to ammunition, so our Soldiers have what they need to sustain themselves in combat," said Lt. Col. Dennis Bowers, brigade operations officer. "Additionally, we provide oversight of financing and postal support to ensure deployed Soldiers get paid and receive their mail."

The "Durable" Brigade deployed with its Special Troops Battalion and assumed command and control over subordinate units, including the 548th and 378th combat sustainment support battalions. The units provide support for warfighters via land and air operations.

After bidding farewell to the outgoing 10th Sustainment Brigade, Col. Brian Tempest, commander, 1st Sust. Bde., welcomed the new units.

"To the 548th and 378th CSSB's, you are now part of the new Durable Team," he said. "I am happy to have you on board, and I look forward to working with you. You come with a wealth of knowledge and experience that can only be gained through time on the ground here in Afghanistan."

Although the 1st Sust. Bde. deployed separately from the 1st Inf. Div. headquarters element, both units are now serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

"Everything we do in the sustainment business has a direct impact on a Soldier on the ground. We are trained and ready to take on the task of providing sustainment to U.S. and coalition forces," Tempest said. "We are extremely privileged to join the Joint Sustainment Command-Alpha team and once again reunite with the 1st Inf. Div."
