OBJECTIVES/DESCRIPTION OF CLERKSHIP:
The Speech Pathology Clinic offers a clinical rotation for speech-language pathology graduate students. The speech pathology clinic provides diagnostic and management services for cerebrovascular accident with a diagnosis of communicative impairments, traumatic brain injury with a diagnosis of cognitive-linguistic deficits, stuttering, vocal-cord dysfunction, dysphonia, and dysphagia.
The emphasis is on the diagnosis and management of a wide-range of speech, language, voice, swallowing, and neurologically impaired adults in both the outpatient and inpatient setting. Each student will have direct supervision by the speech-language pathologist. Each student will become familiar with instrumentation (e.g., videoendoscopy/stroboscopy, CSL, MBSS) and assessment protocols utilized in the Speech Pathology Clinic. Each student will become familiar with written documentation protocols. Each graduate student will be expected to be on site 3-5 days per week from 0730-1500.
Student clinical evaluations will be completed mid-semester and at the end of the clinical rotation. It is expected that the graduate students will demonstrate knowledge and skills as evaluated by the attached Student Clinical Evaluation Form or other evaluation criteria per university guidelines.
A graduate student completing this rotation will have a better appreciation and understanding of speech-language pathology in a medical setting.
