Overview

2012 marks the 11th Anniversary of Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), which serves to draw attention to the historical and ongoing significance of Jazz in American culture. JAM is also intended to generate greater interest in what’s currently happening in the world of jazz, both in the United States and abroad, by encouraging people from all generations to participate in jazz related events such as attending jazz concerts, listening to jazz radio, or studying jazz music.

Additionally, on October 21, 2011 the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted a resolution establishing April 30th as International Jazz Day. The U.S. was a proud sponsor of this resolution which was adopted enthusiastically and by acclamation.

All posts can participate in JAM and the first-ever International Jazz Day through outreach, education, and cultural programming. Past successful Embassy JAM events have included: concerts, lectures, film series, jazz recordings, radio programming, relevant periodicals, or any other ideas that generate interest in jazz.
