Fogarty and NIH have a long history of supporting medical science advances in Latin America, which faces many of the same chronic disease challenges found in the U.S. as well as the perennial threat of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and Chagas Disease. Over the decades, Fogarty has helped build capacity in the region, funding cutting-edge research at institutions like GHESKIO in Haiti and Cayetano Heredia University in Peru. Additionally, Fogarty collaborated with National Cancer Institute in 2009 to launch a groundbreaking three-year pilot program focused on the prevention and treatment of cancer in Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Uruguay.
