How many officers do these state and local law enforcement agencies employ?

According to the 2004 BJS Census of State and Local Enforcement Agencies, state and local agencies employed about 732,000 full-time sworn officers as of September 2004. Local police departments employed 447,000 of these officers, sheriffs’ offices, 175,000, and the 49 primary state law enforcement agencies, 58,000.
