According to the 2004 BJS Census of State and Local Enforcement Agencies, state and local agencies employed about 732,000 full-time sworn officers as of September 2004. Local police departments employed 447,000 of these officers, sheriffs’ offices, 175,000, and the 49 primary state law enforcement agencies, 58,000. |
