OBJECTIVES/DESCRIPTION OF CLERKSHIP:
The Internal Medicine Service offers a clerkship for third and fourth year medical students. The emphasis is on diagnosing and managing general internal medicine problems in an ambulatory setting. This is an excellent opportunity to see predominantly chronic disease in a stable, older population. Each clerk will have direct supervision by a staff internist. The student will be expected to do in-depth work-ups on several new patients daily and return evaluations as time allows. Each case is discussed in-depth, to include interpretation of labs, x-rays, and ECGs; flexible sigmoidoscopies can also be done. The clinic schedule allows and encourages attendance in morning report and teaching conference. Call with a ward team is voluntary and can be arranged. A clinical clerk finishing this rotation will have a better appreciation and understanding of Internal Medicine in an outpatient setting.
