The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has committed an additional $30 million to scale up gender-based violence prevention and response efforts in three of its partner countries – Tanzania, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

To ensure efficient and coordinated scale-ups in the three countries, PEPFAR is hosting a day and a half Gender-Based Violence Consultation in Washington, D.C. on May 6 and 7, 2010. U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Ambassador Eric Goosby and Ambassador-at-Large Melanne Verveer will open the consultation at 9:00a.m on May 6.

This consultation is intended to support representatives from the three countries develop key interventions and programs through expert panel discussion, break-out sessions, and dialogue about successful GBV interventions and challenges faced when implementing GBV programming. This consultation will also focus on how to best evaluate and monitor progress of GBV activities.

The consultation will take place at the Renaissance Hotel located at 1143 New Hampshire Avenue, NW.

This event is open to the press. To register for this event, please send your name and media organization to Erica Ballard at BallardEL@state.gov.
