Ambassador Goosby to Speak at the XVIII International AIDS Conference

NOTICE TO THE PRESS

From July 18 to 23, Ambassador Eric Goosby, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, will lead the U.S. delegation to the XVIII International AIDS Conference. The conference will take place at the Reed Messe Wein Conference Center in Vienna, Austria.

On Sunday, July 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Central Europe Summer Time (CEST), Ambassador Goosby will speak at satellite symposium sponsored by the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) on "Advancing Country Ownership: Achieving Program Sustainability and Long-Term Impact" in Mini Room 8. A central focus of PEPFAR is increasing country ownership in HIV strategy, program design and implementation. This session will include presenters from two PEPFAR-supported countries who will discuss issues of leadership, management, health systems, and a comprehensive response to HIV in each country's context. There will be a discussion to identify common threads for action by governments, civil society and the private sector. From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. CEST, PEPFAR will also host a satellite symposium on "Gender Programming and Practices: Practical Approaches for Integration with HIV/AIDS" in Mini Room 8. Also on Sunday, July 18, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. CEST, Ambassador Goosby will speak at a special session on the Future of AIDS Diplomacy in Session Room 5. From 3:45 to 5:45 p.m. CEST, Ambassador Goosby will speak at the special session on "HIV and Millennium Development Goals: Can We Do One Without the Other?" in Session Room 9.

On Monday, July 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. CEST, Ambassador Goosby will co-chair the satellite session organized by UNAIDS on "Paving the Way toward Virtual Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV" in Session Room 8.

On Tuesday, July 20 at 9:00 a.m. CEST, Ambassador Goosby will participate in a press conference with MTV and UNICEF in Press Conference Room 1. The topic of the press conference is Shuga, a hard-hitting drama for young people with compelling HIV prevention and education messages. Other speakers include Ambassador Jimmy Kolker, Chief of HIV/AIDS, UNICEF; Bill Roedy, Chief Executive Officer, MTV Networks International; and Dina Borzekowski, Researcher, Johns Hopkins University.

Also on Tuesday, July 20, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. CEST, Ambassador Goosby will speak at the bridging session on "Starting HAART: When to Take the First Step?" in Session Room 1. At 2:00 p.m. CEST, Ambassador Goosby will participate in a press conference organized by Population Services International on "Scaling up Male Circumcision: Results and Recommendations" in Press Conference Room 2. From 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. CEST, Ambassador Goosby will speak at the symposium on "The Future of Universal Access - Part 2" in Session Room 1.

On Friday, July 23 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. CEST, Ambassador Goosby will participate in a symposium on "Prevention and Treatment of HIV and AIDS Among Drug Using Populations: A Global Perspective" in Session Room 7. From 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., Ambassador Goosby will participate in the Closing Session of the Conference in Session Room 1.

All events listed above take place in the Reed Messe Wein Conference Center, Messeplatz 1, Vienna, Austria. The Kaiser Family Foundation is the official webcaster for AIDS 2010, providing daily coverage of conference developments on its website, www.kff.org/aids2010. Some sessions, including the Opening and Closing Sessions, will be presented via live webcast, while other coverage will be tape-delayed by a few hours and available on-demand.
