  2. "If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking." — General George S. Patton
  3. I've released my Capstone Concept for Joint Operations (CCJO). It emphasizes taking advantage of emerging technologies and learning from the last decade of war. At its heart, the CCJO aims to develop leaders who understand context, can navigate through uncertainty, and lead transitions. I encourage you to read this and share your thoughts.
  4. Since 1775, the U.S. Navy has bravely defended our nation and upheld a rich tradition and spirit that resonates today. As we celebrate the Navy’s 237th birthday, I want to recognize our sailors who live up to the Profession of Arms. Thank you to our shipmates and families for all you do.
  5. Last week at Kansas State's Landon Lecture, I argued that we all have a role in shaping how history will view today's generation of veterans. As they return to our communities after a decade of war, what is the image of them in your mind? What can we do together to turn up the volume on this national conversation?
  6. I finished reading “Beautiful Souls” by Eyal Press. Press examines "the voice of conscience" in times of moral dilemmas. Through four interesting historical case studies, he encourages us to think about "choices" and how we make them. In a profession that challenges us to "keep our honor clean" (Marine Corps Hymn), this book is worth the read.
  7. I enjoyed spending a couple days at the US Air Force Academy (Official) meeting with cadets over lunch and talking to the firsties. You all have chosen to lead the ‘uncommon life’ and I hope you make the most of your time at the Academy. Today, Deanie and I attended the Air Force vs. US Naval Academy football game. We had a great time both on and off the field—great game.

  8. Today, on Gold Star Mother's Day, we honor the moms who have lost a son or daughter in service to our nation. While none of us can truly say that we know what you've been through, you've inspired us by bonding together to remember the lives of our fallen and continuing to serve other families in need. You'll always be a part of our military family and we deeply appreciate your service and your sacrifice.
  9. As the Chairman, I talk often about leadership. Share with me: what do you think is the most important attribute of a leader?
  10. I recently read "The Revenge of Geography" by Robert Kaplan. One of our finest historians and best writers, Kaplan cautions us not to forget history and geography in our enthusiasm for globalism. As we build our understanding of national security issues and craft our security strategy Kaplan's argument must be part of the conversation. See especially a thought provoking chapter on our relationship with Mexico.
