Yarmuth Named to Powerful Ways & Means Committee

Selection Committee names second term member in rare move

(Washington, DC) Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3) has been selected to serve on the House Committee on Ways & Means for the 111th Congress.

“The Committee on Ways and Means will be the front line for many of the tough challenges that confront our nation in the coming years,” Congressman Yarmuth said.  “I look forward to working for solutions that will revitalize our economy, provide affordable health care to all Americans, bolster retirement security, and ensure that every child in America has the opportunity to succeed.”

“Congressman John Yarmuth will be a powerful voice for the people of Kentucky and indeed all Americans as a new member of the Ways and Means Committee,” Speaker Pelosi said.  “His experience and dedication will be instrumental to the efforts of the 111th Congress to take America in a new direction that restores economic security and gets our nation back on track.”

The committee’s jurisdiction includes health care, retirement security, tax policy, trade, and child welfare.  The Constitution requires all policies regarding taxation originate in the House of Representatives, and therefore the House Committee on Ways and Means.

“I am very proud of the work  we accomplished in the 110th Congress and, in this new role, I look forward to continuing my work for strong oversight, restoring America’s faith in the future, and delivering for the people of Louisville.”

Subcommittee assignments will be announced at a later date.
