Science Teachers and the Importance of Engaged Students
Teachers are the critical component to The GLOBE Program. Research shows roughly one third of all students nationwide lose interest in science because they either don't experience hands-on science or it isn't taught in an engaging way. The GLOBE Program offers high-quality, interactive activities and helps teachers become more confident teaching science at the elementary and secondary level, so they can foster the next generation of scientists, mathematicians and technologists.
A Vision of GLOBE: 16th Annual GLOBE Partner Meeting
Country coordinators, teachers and students from around the world met in St. Paul, Minnesota (on the campus of St. Catherine University) to receive hands-on training using GLOBE protocols. Participants also received interactive training using GLOBE's new and robust website portal. In addition, teachers, parents, students and country coordinators shared the direct impacts that GLOBE has had on them, their classroom and community. GLOBE engages students in Earth science through hands-on collection of real-time data.

At the 16th Annual GLOBE Partner Meeting, students presented research they conducted ---- using soil, water, air and macro-invertebrate studies GLOBE Protocols ---- to more than 130 representatives from nearly 25 countries.
Meeting Highlights
The 16th Annual GLOBE Partner Meeting took place 16-20 July 2012, held on the campus of St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA.
Participants were treated to inspiring reports from GLOBE regions around the world as well as meaningful updates and presentations from GLOBE Program Office (GPO) staff.
There were a number of "firsts" at the meeting this year. Notably, GLOBE students and teachers who took center stage and presented their GLOBE work during the Student Research Symposium. The interactive poster session provided students and teachers from around the world an opportunity to showcase their research. To read more and see photos from the symposium, see click here.
Participants were treated to several engaging keynote addresses from the likes of Climate Scientist Katherine Hayhoe, environmental educators Mike Link and Kate Crowley and Betty Hawk from 3M.
The Meeting featured several interactive sessions. Of primary interest: a two-day, hands-on training by GPO staff and representatives from Raytheon Web Services on the new GLOBE website. Participants were able to set up and log into their accounts on the new GLOBE website as well as gain valuable tips on how to connect with other GLOBE community members via the interactive web portal. Parallel to this, participants had the opportunity to partake in two days of hands-on training around GLOBE protocols, ESSPs and CloudSat. To see more, click here.
