The 673d Air Base Wing traces its history to King Salmon Air Force Station, Naknek, Alaska, when it was activated in April 1948. The unit was originally designated Naknek Air Force Base Detachment and was assigned to the Alaskan Air Command. In April 1949, the Alaskan Air Command renamed the unit the 5040th Air Base Squadron, which provided base operating support for the installation operating as a satellite base of Elmendorf AFB.
The original mission designated the base as an advanced staging field on the Alaska Peninsula for ferrying of aircraft from the mainland to the Aleutian Island stations. The base also operated part of a network of mainland bases providing air defense for Alaska. In December 1952, King Salmon Air Base became the home of the 705th Air Control and Warning Squadron and the 5040th Air Base Squadron expanded to support that additional mission.
In March 1953, operational control of the squadron changed from the Alaskan Air Command to the newly-activated 10th Air Division. This relationship was short-lived, however, and the 5040th Air Base Squadron inactivated in April 1953. The 673d Air Base Wing entered the next phase of its history in July 1958 when the 5040th Air Base Squadron activated at Shemya Airport, Alaska. The squadron was renamed the 5073rd Air Base Squadron October 1961 and assigned to the Alaskan Air Command.
The 5073rd Air Base Squadron operated, maintained, and administered Shemya Airport (later known as Shemya Air Force Station and Shemya Air Force Base), Alaska, and provided support to tenants organizations including Army and Navy units as well as an Operating Location of the Strategic Air Command.
By 1974, the support activity at Shemya had increased to a level requiring a group structure and in October 1974, the squadron was reorganized and re-designated as the 5073rd Air Base Group. The group contained seventeen divisions of various sizes separated along functional lines, from a large squadron to single-person offices. In January 1990, the Group reorganized into an air base squadron, a civil engineer squadron, and a logistics squadron, along with the director of operations, chaplain, comptroller and clinic.
In 1990, the Alaskan Air Command inactivated and the 5073 Air Base Group was assigned to the 11th Air Force. In January 1992, the unit received its final designation when the Air Force adopted new rules that eliminated four-digit designations and the 5073 Air Base Group became the 673d Air Base Group. On 1 April 1995, the 673d Air Base Group inactivated at Shemya, known as Eareckson Air Force Station since 1993, and closed the second chapter of the organization.
On 30 July 2010, the 673d Air Base Wing activated as the host wing combining installation management functions of Elmendorf AFB's 3rd Wing and U.S. Army Garrison Fort Richardson. Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER), holds the distinction of being one of twelve joint bases that were created in BRAC 2005. The 673d ABW consists of four groups that operate and maintain the joint base for air sovereignty, combat training, force staging and throughput operations in support of worldwide contingencies. The installation hosts the headquarters for the United States Alaskan Command, 11th Air Force, U.S. Army Alaska, and the Alaskan North American Aerospace Defense Command Region. The 673d ABW comprises over 5,500 joint military and civilian personnel, supporting America's Arctic Warriors and their families. The wing supports and enables three AF total-force wings, two Army Brigades and 55 other tenant units. In addition, the wing provides medical care to over 35,000 joint service members, dependents, VA patients and retirees throughout Alaska. The 673d ABW maintains an $11.4B infrastructure encompassing 84,000 acres, ensuring Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson remains America's premier strategic power projection platform.

The 673d Medical Group is comprised of a combined DoD and VA workforce of more than 1,100 personnel in six squadrons who provide world class care to Alaska's past and present warriors and their families.
The 673 MDG delivers health care to twenty percent of the Anchorage population by providing over 221,000 outpatient visits, 3,300 surgeries, 444,000 prescriptions and 592,000 lab procedures annually and are truly dedicated to the motto "finding ways to safely say yes."

The 673d Mission Support Group (MSG) is comprised of four Squadrons, the 673d Contracting Squadron, the 673d Communications Squadron, the 673d Security Forces Squadron and the 673d Force Support Squadron, with a total work force of over 1,900 military, civilian and non-appropriated fund (NAF) personnel supporting the 673d Air Base Wing and more than 40 associate and tenant units assigned to Joint Base Elmendorf - Richardson.

The 673d Logistics Readiness Group, the 673d Logistics Readiness Squadron and the 773d Logistics Readiness Squadron with a combined staff of over 500 personnel are responsible for the operation and maintenance of a vehicle fleet in excess of 1,500 vehicles worth $121 million; deployment operations for nearly 3,000 tons of Air Force equipment, 1,100 pieces of Army rolling stock and 600 storage containers; supply operations for nearly 48,000 line items valued at over $408 million; storage and distribution of 12.5 million gallons of fuel; and traffic management support for 12,500 cargo shipments, 5,300 household good shipments and 10,630 ticketed travelers. |

The 673d Civil Engineer Group (CEG) is a highly motivated, multi-disciplinary professional workforce comprised of the 673d Civil Engineer Squadron and the 773d Civil Engineer Squadron. Over 900 military and civilian members maintain an $11.4B infrastructure and provide superb real property maintenance and construction, support utilities, fire and disaster protection, explosive ordnance disposal, housing services, planning, and environmental management for over 84,000 acres of property while supporting a total JBER population of 35,000, to include over 15,000 joint warriors. |

The 673d Air Base Wing Staff Judge Advocate Office provides legal services for JBER. They assist commanders with maintaining good order and discipline, and advise military members, retirees and their family members on a variety of personal, civil and legal problems. They are located on the third floor of the People Center, 8517 20th Street.
