From Marine to Engineer – Serving Ohio Proudly

When an injury cut Eric Downing’s Marine career short he was left with a choice. He’d worked in construction and on the farm; he was an aircraft mechanic in the Marines. What would he do now? Eric decided to put his GI Bill benefit to use and enrolled in the University of Akron to study engineering. Algae bloom in Lake Erie as seen from space

Innovative Project Explores Using Coal Plant Waste to Benefit Lake Erie

A 2011 Conservation Innovation Grant funded by the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Ohio may help improve one of the most critical natural resource issues in Lake Erie, too much algae.  The project, conducted by researchers at Ohio State University, uses a type of gypsum from power plant scrubbers to keep soluble phosphorus, which algae love, from getting into the lake.

1930's Drought Survivors:  Tell Your Story

The Ken Burns PBS Documentary "The Dust Bowl" shows how the forces of man and nature combined to bring ruin to the land and the people depending on it for survival.  The grasslands of the Great Plains is the focus of most history around this time, but other places suffered too.  Did you live through this worst hard time and have a story to tell?  Perhaps you remember stories told to you by Ohio friends or relatives?  Pictures, like this iconic image by Dorothea Lange in 1936, say more than any words.  Do you have Ohio pictures from this time you'd like to share?  Please contact us if you want to share your Dust Bowl story.
