The Meadows School Grabs Nevada Science Bowl Victory

Final Match… Final Question… Final Answer…

Smart teams imitate sports teams! Although there was no power outage, the Nevada Science Bowl final match came down to the final answer to the last question with no time left on the clock! The Meadows School from Las Vegas, Nevada triumphed over Northwest Career and Technical Academy of Las Vegas, Nevada in a tight contest by a final score of 58-52. The Meadows School never lost a match during the tournament. As Nevada Science Bowl regional champions, The Meadows School wins $5000 for their school’s math or science departments, and will continue on to represent Nevada in the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. in April.

Saturday’s competition started with 32 high school teams from Nevada, California, and Utah squaring off in a fast-paced “Jeopardy-style” format. The double-elimination tournament stretched all day with students testing their knowledge of astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, mathematics and physics.

More than 15,000 high school students across the country square off in regional science bowl competitions to qualify for the finals of the U.S. Department of Energy’s annual National Science Bowl®, the largest and most prestigious science competition in the United States.

The Nevada Science Bowl was held at the VegasPBS facility in Las Vegas. VegasPBS will televise the championship match between The Meadows School and Northwest Career and Technical Academy on Thursday March 21, 2013 at 7:30 PM.

Sponsors of the Nevada Science Bowl include: U.S. Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Site Office, National Security Technologies (NSTec), Northrop Grumman, U.S. Department of the Interior, Navarro-Intera, Cox Communications, WSI-Nevada Team, Caesars Entertainment, Barrick Gold, CH2M HILL, NV Energy, VegasPBS, and the National Atomic Testing Museum.
