Chief Master Sergeant Richard Mertz is Command Chief, 111th Fighter Wing, Pennsylvania Air National Guard, located at Willow Grove Air Reserve Station, Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. As the Command Chief, he reports directly to the Wing Commander on enlisted personnel issues, to include professional military education, enlisted promotions, mentorship, morale, family, community relations, and esprit de corps.
Chief Mertz entered into military service in May 1976. After technical training, he was assigned to the 49th Logistics Squadron at Holloman AFB, New Mexico. In 1980 Chief Mertz was assigned to the 111th Logistics Squadron at Willow Grove ARS, Pennsylvania, where he held various positions such as Material Facilities Supervisor and the Storage and Issue Chief.
In 2006 Chief Mertz was selected for the full time position as the Airfield Manager for the 103rd Fighter Squadron and the Operations Support Squadron at Willow Grove ARS. In May 2008 he was appointed to the dual role as the 111th Fighter Wing Command Chief.
