HARTFORD, CT – Today, the Connecticut Delegation issued a statement in response to the White House’s recent announcement that the Presidential Citizens Medal will be awarded posthumously to the six educators who were killed in the Newtown massacre.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, on which Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) serves as one of 12 vice-chairs, announced a comprehensive set of 15 policy principles intended to reduce gun violence while respecting the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans.

WASHINGTON, DC—Connecticut’s congressional delegation released the following statement today applauding the announcement Connecticut will be receiving $71.8 million that may be used to repair homes and businesses damaged by Hurricane Sandy, and to upgrade and repair critical infrastructure.

“Four years ago today, the President signed into law a tremendously important piece of legislation that moved our country forward in the fight for equal pay. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was both a historic achievement and a critical first step – ensuring that women can have their chance in court to challenge pay discrimination.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty co-sponsored the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013, legislation that would strengthen the ability of the federal government, the states, law enforcement, and service providers to combat domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) released the following statement regarding the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s historic decision in Roe v. Wade:

“I’m extremely encouraged by the continuing commitment President Obama and Vice-President Biden have shown to enacting real, meaningful change to save lives, and I’m grateful to them for the care and support they’ve shown for the Newtown community. “Above all, this is about saving lives. Families in Newtown want to know their children are safe and that other families are spared the same horrific loss they’ve experienced. I commend the President for taking immediate and concrete steps today to reduce gun violence. I also agree that we need a commonsense, comprehensive approach to prevent gun violence that includes reinstatement and strengthening of the ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, requiring universal background checks, and addressing gun trafficking.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) joined her fellow vice-chairs on the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-5), chair of the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, for a meeting with Vice President Joe Biden, Attorney General Eric Holder, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius to discuss a comprehensive approach to reduce and prevent gun violence.

WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty has been named to serve on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology during her first term as the Representative for Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District. “Science and technology are critical to our economy in the 5th District, and a strong partnership at the federal level will be critical to boosting high-tech businesses and educational institutions,” Esty said. “High-tech manufacturers like Jonal Labs in Meriden and FuelCell Energy in Torrington and Danbury are already creating jobs for people in our district. Jackson Labs in Farmington has put our district on the cutting edge of bioscience research. And our community colleges and technical high schools, including Naugatuck Valley Community College in Waterbury, are helping train young people for the advanced manufacturing jobs of the future. I’m honored and excited to have the opportunity to work with my colleagues on the Science, Space and Technology Committee and with my constituents in the 5th District to boost job creation, encourage research and development, and advocate for educational institutions across central and northwest Connecticut.” This is the second of two committee assignments for Esty. Esty also serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) was named today as one of 12 vice chairs to serve on the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-5), chair of the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, made the announcement today in Washington. The vice chairs and Thompson will make up the task force’s leadership team.

Elizabeth Esty was sworn in as the new Representative for Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District today. Esty took the Oath of Office on the House Floor just after noon.
