Hanscom Air Force Base located around 25 miles from Devens has on-post housing. Effective 1 May 00, any active duty military except active duty National Guardsmen assigned within a one hour commute time of Hanscom AFB is placed on a consolidated first come first serve priority 2 listing within their respective housing needs category, and offered housing as it becomes available. Apartment rentals in this area routinely require first month rent, last month rent, and often a security deposit equal to one month rent, to be paid prior to occupancy.

Community Housing

Housing is expensive and scarce. For information on rentals and home purchases contact Army Community Service Office, Devens, (978) 796-3119; DSN 256-3119, 0630-1600, M-F.

There are some furnished efficiency type apartments available through the Devens Commerce Center for single service members. A lease is required along with first,last month and security deposit.

There is NO Government Housing on Fort Devens.

Housing Allowances

 

Utilities

The cost of utilities depends on the utility company and customer habits. Security deposit is required for hook ups. Adequate insulation in a home/apartment and use of conservation measures can have a major impact on utility bills in a cold climate like New England.

Electric heat is said to be more expensive than gas or oil. Oil prices have risen in the past few years.

Comment : Hours: 0730-1600 Each town/city has its own water department.  Ayer, MA is located just    outside Devens and is listed as an example of a town water department. It is recommended that you have your water meter read before you move into a home/apartment and again before you vacate.

 

Unaccompanied PCS

There is no housing for accompanied or unaccompanied service members on Devens. Single service members may live off past and draw single basic allowance for quarters.Call ACS Relocation office for current listings of off-post rental apartments and units. 978-796-3119 If you are leaving your family at another location, be sure they understand the reason for the separation. Be certain that your spouse and older children are aware of your financial system: bills, checkbook, banking institution, and family support numbers in their area.
