Primary Implementing Partner: Save the Children

Regions of Operation: Amhara, Oromia, SNNP, and Tigray

Goal:

To improve the health status and quality of life of over 900,000 beneficiaries in target communities in four regions.

Project Objectives:

  • Improving the use of safe water, sanitation and hygiene services and practices

Description:

The WASH program develops and rehabilitates springs, hand dug wells and shallow wells, and promotes construction of household latrines and gender appropriate school sanitation facilities. It also employs innovative approaches for hygiene behavior change, with an emphasis on reducing open defecation, improving hand washing, water storage and handling, and point of use water treatment. One of the program’s main strategies for success and sustainability involves system strengthening and capacity building at various levels, so training of committees, local artisans, health extension workers and health offices is carried out. In addition, WASH also aims to strengthen the link between community structures and district water and health offices to maximize water supply, sanitation and hygiene outcomes.

Expected Results:

  • Develop new water supply schemes and conduct water quality tests for water supply schemes
  • Promote construction of household latrines
  • Establish/revitalize village and woreda WASH committees and trained committee members on scheme caretaking, operation and simple maintenance
  • Improve access to sustainable, safe and adequate water supply
  • Increase access to improved sanitation facilities
  • Increase health and hygiene behavior
  • Increase community and government capacity to manage WASH activities
