Goal:
Improve the quality of primary education through the development of teachers’ professional capacity, provision of supplementary reading materials to support instruction and strengthening of the planning and management capacity of the primary education system.
Objectives:
- Prepare 20,000 primary school teachers and support 2,615 primary schools
- Provide more than 20,000 copies of manuals and handbooks to support teachers
- Train 9,000 school principals, district education officers and local education and training board members from selected districts in all regions of the country to improve planning, management and monitoring of education quality
Description:
In Ethiopia studies have showed a steady decline in how much children are learning in the classroom, as the rates of primary school enrollment have risen to 95 percent. Ethiopian teachers are not adequately trained to teach in ways that maximize student learning. This poor quality of education is contributing to high dropout rates, over 18 percent in 2009, and prevents students from developing a foundation for future learning. The major components of this project are training teachers, improving the system’s planning and management, and strengthening the monitoring and evaluation of primary education. IQPEP aims to improve learning outcomes in primary school with special focus on early grade reading (the foundation for staying in school and for better overall achievements throughout primary education and beyond).
Expected Results:
- Improve learning achievement of students at the end of grade four and grade eight of primary education
- Expand teaching capacity
- Increase access to reading materials
