USAID is committed to improving health systems by strengthening human resources, expanding health financing options, and increasing health commodity and essential drug security. Currently, health service delivery in Ethiopia is characterized by low service utilization as the result of an inadequate number of well-trained health providers, limited health infrastructure, shortages of equipment and supplies, and weak health systems. USAID works to strengthen policy, governance, and evidence-based decision making to improve current health systems management.

Projects include:

• Central Contraceptive Procurement: Procure and distribute contraceptives to public health facilities in the Integrated Family Health Program service delivery network.
• Grants Solicitation and Management (GSM): Ensure the goals are met under each grant awarded to selected Ethiopian organizations to provide HIV/AIDS prevention and care services in high prevalence areas, while simultaneously assuring the growth and development of grantee organizations.
• Health Management Information System (HMIS) Support Project: Strengthen data collection and use to document current health services and disease patterns and plan future health interventions.

• Health Sector Financing Reform (HSFR): Enhance the quality and equity of essential health services through reform and institutionalization of a sustainable health financing system that accommodates alternative financing and management mechanisms.
• Improving the Logistics System/DELIVER II: Improve management of essential contraceptives by strengthening the contraceptive logistics system and building an integrated health logistics system.
• Strengthening Human Resources for Health (HRH): Address health workforce shortages and improve the quality of pre-service education and in- service training and governance system for human resources management including licensing.
• Supply Chain Management System (SCMS): Establish a safe, secure, reliable and sustainable supply chain management system to procure, store and distribute pharmaceuticals and other products needed to provide care and treatment of persons with HIV/AIDS.
