Combat medics commended

Nine combat medics with the 403rd Aeromedical Staging Squadron were recognized for their outstanding individual efforts during a joint war exercise held June 13-27 at Fort Hunter Leggett in California. They were, from left, Senior Airman Robert Davis, Master Sgt. Wanda McGee, Senior Airman Melinda Bardell, Senior Airman Hannah Agee, Master Sgt. Anthony Pittman, Tech. Sgt. Katherine Eaton and Maj. Medics get new commander

Lt. Col. Barbara Persons accepts the 403rd Aeromedical Staging Squadron guidon from Col. Jay Jensen, 403rd Wing commander, in an assumption of command ceremony held Sept. 11, 2011 at the 81st Medical Group auditorium, Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. Persons replaces former 403rd ASTS Commander Col. Guy Favaloro, who retired from the Air Force in July 2011. ASTS Mass Casualty Exercise

Senior Master Sgt. John Gambs, 403rd Aeromedical Staging Squadron administrative technician, and Senior Airman Michael Cassaday, 403rd ASTS medical technician, secure a “patient” for transport to the flightline for aeromedical evacuation. Senior Airman Marshelle Ely, 403rd ASTS, simulated a right shoulder injury from shrapnel received during the mass casualty exercise. The exercised was conducted during the November Unit Training Assembly in preparation for the 403rd Wing’s upcoming Operation Readiness Inspection.

ASTS Mass Casualty Exercise

Capt. Tammy Rush, 403rd Aeromedical Staging Squadron nurse, ensures her “patient” is in stable condition during a mass casualty exercise. Airman 1st Class Lysa Busalacchi, 403rd ASTS medical technician, was brought in to the Contingency Aeromedical Staging Facility with a simulated abdominal wound. The CASF acts as a temporary field hospital where patients are stabilized before transport to a permanent medical facility for further treatment. The mass casualty exercised was conducted during the November Unit Training Assembly in preparation for the 403rd Wing’s upcoming Operation Readiness Inspection.

ASTS Mass Casualty Exercise

The "casualty" in question, Senior Airman Jennifer Muir, a 403rd ASTS dental technician, was suffering from a simulated pain in her left thigh. Eye on Deployment

Major David Parker, cheif of optometry with the 403rd Aerial Port Squadron demonstrates an eye exam on Senior Airman Michael Cassidy, a medical technician also with the 403rd ASTS. The optometry clinic ensure Airman stay current with their vision. "Every two years a prescription needs to be updated," said Major Parker. Medical Exercise

Medics rush to the attention of "patient" Col. Maria de los Pons, coomander, 403rd ASTS, during an exercise designed to help prepare the unit for upcoming inspections.
