USAID focuses on saving millions of lives by utilizing treatment, detection, and referral services to combat Ethiopia’s regrettably high TB rates. Ethiopia has the seventh highest Tuberculosis (TB) burden in the world: one third of the population is infected. With the Global Health Initiative, USAID will improve and expand TB diagnostic services and screening in rural areas and among HIV positives, who make up 20 percent of TB cases each year. Increased distribution and development of materials will also aid in infection control efforts within communities.
