Under the State Department’s Empowering Women and Girls through Sports Initiative, U.S. Olympians Jessica Mendoza and Ruby Rojas went to Nicaragua as sports envoys from January 31 – February 5, 2013. For the first time, the Department – in partnership with USA Softball – engaged underserved girls in Esteli and Managua through softball. Mendoza and Rojas enthusiastically led a series of clinics for athletes and coaches as well as spearheaded discussions on leadership and the i...mportance of health and wellness. Mendoza, who also serves on the U.S. Department of State’s Council to Empower Women and Girls Through Sports, is a two-time Olympian, world softball champion, and inductee in the Latin Sports Hall of Fame. 14. Working together, the State Department and NBA sent former WNBA players Tamika Raymond and Nykesha Sales to Ukraine as Sports Envoys from January 28 to February 2, 2013. As a part of the overall Empowering Women and Girls through Sports Ini...tiative, this program was designed to be one in a series of basketball envoy programs around the world.

As a part of the initiative, the exchange reached out to girls and female coaches in Kyiv and Donetsk through basketball clinics and activities that highlighted the importance of health, teamwork, and the benefits of participating in sports. While in Kyiv, Ms. Raymond and Ms. Sales led three basketball clinics for teenage girls, held a disability sports basketball session, participated in an English language program, and met with alumni from other Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs youth programs. They then travelled to Donetsk in eastern Ukraine to conduct additional basketball clinics, met with students at a special school focused on sports, and participated in interviews with local media. The envoys highlighted the importance of Title IX in women’s sports throughout the program.

Ms. Raymond and Ms. Sales are longtime supporters of the Department’s sports diplomacy efforts having served as Sports Envoys several times in the past. Ms. Raymond traveled to Malawi, Tanzania, and most recently China to lead Sports Envoy programs. Ms. Sales went to Uganda, Cape Verde, Haiti, and Venezuela to conduct Sports Envoy programs. As WNBA stars and community leaders, both women have excelled on and off the court in their efforts to advance the rights of women and youth through sports.
