10/20/2011 - ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- Airmen from the 36th Maintenance Squadron, 36th Wing chapel and their families gathered to participate in a Guam beautification project Oct. 15 here.
Tech. Sgt. Miguel Brown, 36th Wing chapel assistant, asked Jojuana Santos, 36 MXS unit program coordinator, to help coordinate an Island Beautification project, and they gladly accepted.
"After working with Mangilao Mayor, Mr. Nito Blas, it only took two weeks to plan and begin the bus stop painting," said Ms. Santos. "With the children of Guam in mind, I was motivated to do this project. After all, they are the ones that benefit most from this project."
After the Chapel donated the painting equipment, both organizations turned out in full force to completely reface a dilapidated bus stop and its immediate area in Mangilao, Guam. All 20 adults and five children started to clean up the surrounding area of debris and trash. Once the area was cleared, the bus stop was ready.
The team began to pressure wash the old paint dirt off the bus stop. Once it was dried, it was all hands on deck. One by one, including the children, the bust stop began its makeover.
"Our efforts beautified the grounds, erased graffiti and enhanced the neighborhood while making a positive impact on local community relations," said Maj. Robert Leo, 36 MXS commander. "Nearly 50 percent of passing cars honked in support as they went by which was a bonus!"
Throughout the Air Force, Airmen are encouraged to volunteer and help their local communities. Becoming a volunteer can help service members grow professionally and strengthen the culture of today and tomorrow's Air Force.
