2nd Amendment

While tragedies such as the school shootings in Connecticut outrage all Americans, an emotional response should not be allowed to infringe our fundamental civil liberties.  I will stand firm for the 2nd Amendment.

Respecting the right to keep and bear arms is fundamental to a free society, and maintaining freedom ultimately depends on personal responsibility.  Passing more gun control laws will not control violence.  In fact the debate is a distraction from the issues that actually affect the safety of students in our schools.  The evidence proves that there is no correlation between gun laws and decreased violence.

Numerous constituents have told me, “Gun laws only keep guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens.  They do not stop crimes.”

Preserving school safety is best handled at the state and local level.  Community-level identification and response to risks is crucial.  Addressing mental illness is also a state and local responsibility.  Federal government actions should empower rather than restrict state and local governments.

The family, the community and our civil society are the critical factors in keeping our children safe.

Here are some qoutes and articles pertaining to my position on the 2nd amendment:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Congressman Jim Bridenstine commented in advance of tonight’s State of the Union Address to Congress:

I expect tonight’s State of the Union Address to be a wish list for liberals.  The President will use the word “balanced” to call for more taxes, more debt, and more spending.  There is nothing balanced about the President’s big government approach.
