COOLIDGE – An ancient Hohokam farming community and burial sites lie beneath 146 acres of farmland just west of Casa Grande Ruins National Monument.

Because only about 18 inches of earth are disturbed for farming, the archaeological history isn’t threatened, said Karl Cordova, superintendent at the monument.

“Farming is a good way to preserve resources on the land versus residential development,” Cordova said.

FLAGSTAFF, AZ -- U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, D-Ariz., continues her in-district visits today with a tour of Northern Arizona’s Schultz Fire area, which suffered about 15,000 acres of damage in 2010 and temporarily displaced thousands of residents. The blaze, which was started by an abandoned campfire, ravaged the pristine Coconino National Forest and portions of the Kachina Peaks Wilderness just north of Flagstaff.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Four Arizona counties – each of them part of Congressional District 1 – were designated today as primary natural-disaster areas due to prolonged drought. Eight other counties were designated as contiguous disaster counties. Farmers in these regions are now eligible to apply for assistance from the Farm Service Agency (FSA).
