Study Examines Benefits of Expanding North Dakota Oil Refinery CapacityA recent press release through Senator Byron Dorgan’s (D-N.D.) office indicates that the results of an oil refinery study shows "real promise" for building a new 34,000 barrel per day diesel and naphtha refinery in North Dakota. The study was conducted by The North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives with support by the Corval Group, Purvin and Gertz Inc., and Mustang Engineers and Constructors and was managed through the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). DOE Launches "Gasifipedia" Website
The Office of Fossil Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has launched a new public website called "Gasifipedia," a comprehensive online collection of resources to promote better understanding of gasification technology. Gasification offers an alternative to more established ways of converting feedstocks such as coal and biomass into useful products such as electricity or fuels. It is anticipated to be the technology of choice for future near zero-emissions, coal-based plants that produce power, fuels, and/or chemicals.

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced today the selections of six projects that aim to find ways of converting captured carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from industrial sources into useful products such as fuel, plastics, cement, and fertilizers. Funded with $106 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act –matched with $156 million in private cost-share –today’s selections demonstrate the potential opportunity to use CO2 as an inexpensive raw material that can help reduce carbon dioxide emissions while producing useful by-products that Americans can use.

DOE Signs Cooperative Agreement for Carbon Capture Project
The U.S. Department of Energy has signed a cooperative agreement with NRG Energy Inc. (NRG) for the Parish Post-Combustion CO2 Capture and Sequestration Project to design, construct, and operate a system that will capture and store approximately 400,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year. The project, which will be managed by the Office of Fossil Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory, was selected under DOE’s Clean Coal Power Initiative, a collaboration between the federal government and private industry working toward low-emission, coal-based power generation technology.

Data Acquisition Processor Fills Gap for Extreme Down-hole Conditions
Honeywell International, Inc. has developed a Reconfigurable Processor for Data Acquisition (RPDA) – a reprogrammable, multi-functional device that can operate at temperatures up to 250°C (482°F). The system is housed in a rugged package suitable for deep down-hole oil and natural gas logging and measurement-while-drilling (MWD) operations, and permanent wellbore installation applications. The project was funded through a cooperative agreement with the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) under the Office of Fossil Energy’s Oil and Natural Gas Program.
