4/13/2012 - ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- Team Andersen's "Lil' Bombers" are wrapping up their third season since the club's creation and would like to get the word out for other youth soccer stars who may be interested in not just playing soccer, but getting involved in the community.
The "Lil' Bombers" club is part of the Guam Football Association downtown, yet practices are on base Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
"The main reason for creating this club was so military families could put their kids in a club on base that allows them to compete competitively downtown," said Staff Sgt. Christopher Kitts, 36th Operations Support Squadron aircrew and "Lil' Bombers" president.
The seasons consist of nine regular games, and the 10th game is a jamboree. The games are held downtown on the GFA field.
"It's good because the kids get to play downtown and it's a good way for them to get out in the community," said Ruth-Lee Bermudez, military spouse and club secretary. "Everyone with base access is eligible to participate and the skill levels in each team vary so no one is turned away."
Mrs. Bermudez also stated it was a very family oriented club, and all the coaches and volunteers are part of the Team Andersen family.
"I've been a part of soccer for 35 years and I love it," said Lt. Col. Steven Bording, 36 OSS commander and a team coach. "I love being part of the organization, it's great."
Colonel Bording also said he has noticed the teams getting better and more competitive with the teams downtown.
"The club began with 20 kids and now has 55 participating. Plus it gets the kids out exercising and they also get training as well as experience," Sergeant Kitts said. "We would love to keep this club growing. What "Lil' Bombers" provides the kids in the under age 8 teams and above is a chance to play for the national Guam team."
Fall registration will start in July, and while the categories are currently under age 6, under age 8 and under age 10, the club is looking to begin under age 12 and under age 14 teams.
