1/25/2012 - KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- February is dedicated to African Americans who have overcome diversity and incredible odds to shape the U.S. into what it is today.

Throughout African American History Month, the following events will be held in honor of these historical heroes:

AAHM Kick-Off 5K
The month will kick off with a 5-kilometer "fun run" beginning at the Risner Fitness Center Feb. 3 at 6:30 a.m. For more information, please contact Tech. Sgt. Robert Braaten at robert.braaten@kadena.af.mil or Tech. Sgt. Jeremy Mitchell at jeremy.mitchell@kadena.af.mil.

Louise Stokes/ Tydia Pickett track meet and Sheryl Swoopes basketball shoot-out
A basketball shoot-out and track meet will be held Feb. 3 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Risner Fitness Center basketball court and track. The event is open to all with base access. Individuals can win awards, and units or teams with most points will be recognized.

Registration Begins Jan. 23 and runs through Feb. 3. For more information, contact Master Sgt. Deanna Commack at DSN 634-0807 or deanna.commack@kadena.af.mil.

Health fair
A health fair is scheduled Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kadena Exchange, just inside the main entrance. For more information, contact 1st Lt. Jamie Davis at 632-0523 or Tech. Sgt. Robert Braaten at 634-2827 or jamie.davis@kadena.af.mil.

The Edna Lewis soul food top chef cook-off
Is your cooking the best? Compete Feb. 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Schilling Community Center ballroom to be named Kadena's best soul food top chef. Competing chefs must provide food samples for three judges and 10 people from the audience (electrical outlets available to keep food warm).

First place trophies will be given in entree, sides and desserts. Soul food samples will be available and hip hop line dancing will be conducted.

African American Heritage Banquet
The African American Heritage Banquet is scheduled Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Camp Butler Oasis Club. The dinner is $25 per person and includes a dinner buffet, live jazz, and entertainment to highlight the contributions of African American women as part of Black History Month. The African American Heritage Committee's oratorical contest winners will also give a presentation as part of the program. Dress attire will be semi-formal, coat and tie.
