3/23/2012 - KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- March 26 marks the kick-off for the Air Force Assistance Fund (AFAF) campaign.

The campaign runs for six weeks, from March 26 thru May 4, and allows Kadena Airman and their families to provide support for this worthy cause.

"The annual fund raising effort supports four charities that provide assistance to the Air Force family," said 1st LT Tricia Ewing, Financial Analysis flight deputy commander. "The Air Force Aid Society, The Air Force Villages, The Air Force Enlisted Villages, and The LeMay Foundation aid in assisting with emergency, educational, and housing needs for our active and retired Air Force members and their families."

Shoguns raised $166,432, last year and used $221, 567 in Air Force aid. Tougher economic times mean there is a greater need to give support.

"AFAF is important because it solidifies the concept of Airman helping other Airman." Ewing said.

While the Air Force Villages, Air Force Enlisted Villages and the LeMay Foundation helps widows/widowers of military members, the Air Force Aid Society provides immediate help to those who need it.

The Air Force Aid Society provides college grants for dependents, oil changes for spouses of deployed members and First Term Airmen. AFAS also provides and free childcare during Permanent Changes of Station and aids Airmen who are in emergency situations and short on cash with loans or grants.

Airmen can donate within their own units with their AFAF unit representative or go to http://www.afassistancefund.org/ to donate.
