3/21/2012 - KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- The 18th Communications Squadron started migrating to the Air Force Network March 19 before the rest of Kadena to see if any problems may arise.

A few things they've noticed are applicable to all users.

"What users should've already started doing is reducing their mailbox below its size limit," said Tech. Sgt. Harold Becker, 18th CS Comm Focal Point NCO in charge. "For most users, it's 100 megabytes."

Another helpful tip is to turn on all computers in shop offices.

"If you've got computers you haven't used for a while," Becker said, "as long as they're still plugged into the wall, turn them on, reset them, try to log on and make sure the computer is functioning normally."

Notifications will also be e-mailed to squadrons ahead of time -- at 72 hours and 24 hours out -- warning them about their scheduled migration, he said.

Another issue users may have with e-mail is, the cache of names in the "To..." bar will become obsolete. Users will have to delete existing names that drop down when they begin typing. When selecting recipients' addresses, any name that is written in all capital letters in the Global Address List has already been migrated. If names are not in all capitals, they must be deleted from the "To..." drop-down cache.

"A big change users requesting accounts will notice is, they must go through their unit information assurance officer," Becker said. "They will be the verifying authority that says, 'Yes, this person does need access to the network.'"

Once the IAO signs off for the new user, the ticket will be put into the Enterprise Service Desks, or consolidated help desks residing in Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Lackland Air Force Base and Ramstein Air Base, not the base Comm Focal Point.

Due to the migration, the 18th CS has implemented a new call tree when you dial the base Comm Focal Point at 634-2666.
