FTAC Students Donate Blood
Airman 1st Class Michale Smith, 18th Logistics Readiness Squadron First-Term Airman Center student, holds his arm still as U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Jun Villanueva , hospital corpsman from the U. S. Naval Hospital Camp Lester, puts the needle in his arm during the blood drive on Kadena Air Base, Japan, June 27, 2012. The blood drive begins with registration, vital signs, screenings, bag issue, phlebotomy/blood donation and donor recovery with lunch provided. FTAC students receive a briefing prior to donating blood that determines their eligibility to donate blood. The Armed Services Blood Bank Center supports those serving in the Pacific and insures the donated blood is available for the Pacific operational mission, active-duty members, their family and Department of Defense personnel. 7/18/2012 - KADENA AIR BASE, Japan  -- The Wired Bean will be hosting a blood drive sponsored by the Armed Services Blood Band Center on July 24, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The drive will be held at the Wired Bean, Bldg 612, behind the Lemon Lot on Kuter Blvd.

The purpose for the blood drive is to help promote operational readiness for those whom we support.

Douglas Kennedy, Public Affairs Specialist and Blood Donor Recruiter for the ASBBC, said "they need every drop of blood they can get" and with such a large area of operation to supply, it's not an easy task.

"It is extremely important that we get people to come out and donate blood here in Okinawa," said Kennedy. "We supply every single person that is affiliated with the Department of Defense in the United States Pacific Command, but the ASBBC relies exclusively on the blood donated on Okinawa to supply that need."

Donating blood can not only help save a life one day, but it helps in a number of other ways.

"Donating blood is a great for cost savings because for every unit of blood donated, that's one more unit, we don't have to purchase on the local economy," Kennedy said. "Donating also keeps medical facilities readily available with all the blood they might need."

Although there are guidelines that dictate whether or not a person is eligible to donate blood, and many service members may have been deferred from donating in the past, that doesn't mean they can't try again.

"Just because someone may not have been able to give blood in the past does not mean things can't change," said Kennedy. "I urge anyone that wants to donate to at least come by the blood drive or contact me to see if they are eligible."
