Short Biography

I study the effects of climate change on wetland function including baldcypress swamps, monsoonal wetlands, mangrove swamps, northern peatleands, prairie fens, and other wetland types.  I have organized many symposia, written 3 books, and edited 3 special journal volumes, which support broad comparisons and research analysis of wetland function.  Other research topics include the effects of hurricanes on coastal wetlands, flood pulsing in restoration, and biodiversity loss in fens of Europe and North America.  I have developed a research network in North American baldcypress swamps with a network of researchers and study sites for the long term study of function of swamps in the southeastern US. I am the editor of a special feature on Asian wetlands sponsored by the USGS, US State Department, and the Chinese State Forestry Administration.

Climate Variability & Change

Wetlands and Climate Change

I relate climate change to functional shifts across latitudinal gradients in baldcypress swamps, northern peatlands, and other ecosystems, particularly in relation to regeneration, production and nutrient cycling dynamics.  My most important previous research contribution is on how flood pulsing relates to seed dispersal and regeneration dynamics. This topic is the theme of journal articles, my book on wetland restoration, “Wetland restoration, flood pulsing and disturbance dynamics” and of my edited book “Flood pulsing in wetlands: restoring the natural balance” both by John Wiley and Sons, New York.  My wetland research in tropical and sub-tropical regions is diverse and central to the heart of my research interests on regeneration ecology.  My Ph.D. dissertation topic was on the role of goose herbivory in the vegetation dynamics of monsoonal wetlands in north-central India.
