Roadway Safety Data Program (RSDP)
A data-driven safety program combines crash, roadway inventory, and traffic data for systemic identification of infrastructure safety improvements. State crash data systems are advancing with the electronic capture of crash data, electronic transfer of information to central crash databases, and the identification of performance measures to assess crash data quality. Roadway data, however, have not been as thoroughly or uniformly documented or assessed. The RSDP will contribute to the evolution of more robust roadway data systems and advance data-driven safety capabilities. MAP-21 Guidance on State Safety Data Systems: This guidance clarifies (1) State safety data capabilities to satisfy the "Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act" (MAP-21) (P.L. 112-141), and (2) the safety data collection, integration, improvement, and analysis activities eligible for HSIP funding. Model Inventory of Roadway Elements (MIRE): The MIRE is a listing of roadway and traffic data elements needed to support advanced safety analyses. State Safety Data Capability Assessment: FHWA Office of Safety initiated the Roadway Safety Data Capability Assessment to better understand the current status of State safety data systems. Crash Data Improvement Program (CDIP): The CDIP provides States with a means to measure the quality of the information within their crash database. Roadway Data Improvement Program (forthcoming): The Roadway Data Improvement Program (RDIP) is a program to help transportation agencies improve the quality of their roadway data to support their safety initiatives. Highway Safety Manual (HSM) Implementation: The FHWA Office of Safety supports various HSM implementation efforts. The FHWA Office of Safety established the Roadway Safety Data Program (RSDP) to advance State and local safety data systems and safety data analyses. The RSDP is an overarching program of roadway data improvement efforts that is cohesive, well-informed, and visionary enough to not only serve as the basis for near-term projects but also anticipate and plan for mid- and longer-term improvements.
