18th Wing Public Affairs

1/16/2013 - KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- The Kadena tax center, a joint service center with the U.S. Air Force and Army, opens Jan. 23 to help service members and their families with filing their federal and state taxes at no cost.

The tax center is located in Bldg. 1460 on Kadena and walk-in hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p. m. Monday through Friday. Services are open to all active duty service members, Department of Defense civilians, Status of Forces Agreement contractors, DOD Dependent School teachers and their families until June.

"(At the tax center) we provide a free walk-in service for everyone to come and get their taxes done," said Tech. Sgt. Alexius Tucker, 18th Wing chief tax advisor.

The center is also enrolled in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which is an Internal Revenue Service program designed to help low and moderate-income taxpayers complete their annual tax returns at no cost. The program began to provide local taxpayers with free tax return preparation by accounting students, in an effort to provide both a valuable community service and a powerful hands-on learning experience for the students.

Tucker explained that because Kadena's tax center is involved in the VITA program they are able to handle a greater number of taxes than if they didn't have the program.

However, they still have limited resources and time for individual appointments, so in order to make it an easier experience for the tax advisors and customers, they request that people bring all their information with them and print all important documents such as bank information for direct deposits beforehand,

Taxpayers with rental properties and family child care providers will need to schedule an appointment; all others are able to walk-in.

Also, due to unforeseen circumstances Jan. 31 will be the day that the tax center may begin electronic filing, sending the finished tax returns to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

For more information about theTax Center please contact Sergeant Tucker at 634-3300.
