Hope/ Fay Lecture focuses on women leadership in ICT sector

Harare, November 8, 2012: The United States Embassy and Women’s University in Africa will on Friday (November 9th) host the second Hope/Fay Lecture on Friday (November 9th) focusing on Sustainable Development to Empower Women for Leadership Roles in ICT sector. London-based Senegalese-born blogger, technologist and social entrepreneur, Mariéme Jamme will deliver the key note address.

The event starts promptly at 10 am at the WUA Auditorium (Cnr Upper East and Brighton Rd, Mt Pleasant, Harare).

The Hope/ Fay Lecture series is an initiative of WUA and the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section and aims to increase engagement on  issues facing women today in Zimbabwe and globally.  The series will host two featured speakers each year on topical issues. The inaugural lecture was held in late April and featured Elinor Sisulu, Zimbabwean-South African writer, human rights activist and political analyst.

Jamme is the CEO of SpotOne Global Solutions, a UK-based company that helps IT organizations gain a foothold in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. She began her professional life as an asset manager at Citibank, JP Morgan and Lloyds TSB and in various software companies, such as Primavera INC (now Oracle), Microsoft, Osiatis and Computer Associates. She is also founder of Iconscience, a think tank uniting business experts and like-minded individuals in a friendly atmosphere to brainstorm ethical scenarios for sustainable business, social, technological and environmental development in Africa.

Jamme was recently named by CNN as one of Twitter’s top ten African voices on technology development and featured on the CNN African Voices program. She co-founded Africa Gathering, the first global platform bringing together entrepreneurs and others to share ideas about development in Africa. Africa Gathering has already held successful events in London, Paris, Washington DC, Nairobi and Kampala. Jamme is in Zimbabwe to launch the second Apps4Africa competition, which rewards mobile phone app innovators who create apps that assist in community and entrepreneurial development.

In its tenth year, WUA aims to increase the opportunities, capacities and confidence of Zimbabwean women so that they have greater opportunities for employments and participation in national development programmes.
