Did you know that urinary tract infections, or UTIs, are the reason for over 8 million visits to a doctor each year?
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Both adults and children can get UTIs. Women are more likely to get UTIs than men. In fact, half of all women will have a UTI in their lifetime.
For adults, symptoms include:
- a frequent and intense urge to urinate
- a painful, burning feeling during urination
- a fever
- or cloudy, or dark urine
For children, symptoms can include fever, foul smelling urine, frequent and painful urination, or irritability.
If you think you or your child may have a UTI, see a doctor. They can test the urine to find out. If it is a UTI, it can be treated with antibiotics.
