The SAUSHEC Infectious Disease Fellowship training program is structured to provide a supervised training experience such that Army and Air Force ID fellows will acquire competency in infectious diseases with sufficient expertise to act as an independent consultant. Additionally, the program provides a training experience geared toward proficiency of the graduate in the unique requirements of military-specific infectious disease. The program is a minimum of two years in training duration, with all RRC and ABIM requirements met in the first two years. Army fellows train for a third year, primarily for additional research training as directed by the US Army.
Education
Fellows are based at SAMMC. At least 12 months of direct clinical care of patients with ID diagnoses, problems, or questions occur over the first two years of the fellowship program. The first two years are divided into 4 week blocks of clinical rotations and research. The third year is designed for more intense research time and effort. Most fellows serve 2-4 months of clinical time during this year at their discretion, often satisfying their interest in very specialized fields. Throughout their training, ID fellows participate in formal didactics, a wide variety of direct patient care and patient safety/preventive medicine experiences, and other educational experiences organized to teach all six ACGME competencies.
