Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Operator Safety Training Grant - Overview

The CMV Operator Safety Training grant program, as authorized by the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), is a Federal discretionary grant program that provides financial assistance to those who train current and future individuals in the safe operation of CMVs (as defined in 49 U.S.C. 31301).

The grant program has two specific goals:

  1. Expand the number of Commercial Drivers License holders possessing enhanced operator safety training in order to reduce the severity and number of crashes on U.S. roads involving CMVs; and
  1. Assist economically distressed regions of the U.S. by providing workforce training opportunities for qualified individuals to become CMV operators.

Note: Individuals are not eligible for this grant.
