What proportion of felony defendants are charged with violent or drug-related crimes? Among felony cases filed in May 2004 in the nation’s 75 most populous counties, 23% involved a violent offense. About half of those were assault cases. Approximately 1% of all felony defendants were charged with rape, and about half a percent were charged with murder. Drug offenses (37%) comprised the largest percentage of cases, followed by property offenses (31%), and public-order offenses (10%). |
