WYLBUR
WYLBUR has served well as an interactive terminal system, and many
important and successful applications still depend on it. However, computing
directions and trends make it apparent that WYLBUR will not remain a viable
system for the long term. We anticipate providing application owners with
a gradual, minimally-disruptive transition from WYLBUR to newer computing
technologies.
Planning
Is Underway for an MVS Standard System
CIT is in the process of developing an "MVS standard system" for
the NIH Computer Center that will enhance the portability of applications
between data centers while lowering operating costs. This new system will
eventually assume the workload of the current MVS North and South systems.
Three
Ways to Use Oracle
CIT provides users with three choices for using Oracle's full-featured
Enterprise Server—1) installing your own Oracle server (concurrent usage
rights at special rates can be purchased from CFB), 2) using the Oracle
server environment on the Enterprise Open System (Unix), and 3) using the
Oracle RDBMS running on the MVS North and South systems.
Security
Investigation Process Will Be Streamlined
Beginning in September, a new security process will be implemented
on the MVS South system. For account sponsors, this will provide the same
streamlined system that has existed on the North system
Reminder—Charging
for Disaster Recovery Service Begins this Fall
Beginning October 1, 1998, the Disaster Recovery Program will begin
charging participants for their applications on the MVS South system. Charging
for MVS North system will begin in 1999.
NIH
Data Warehouse Has a Webpage—Data Town
"Data Town" provides easy access to the NIH Data Warehouse—for anyone
with a valid CIT account and initials.
Development
Job Class to be Available on MVS Systems August 1
New H class for batch jobs will be available on the North and South
systems. The H class—intended to allow development work to be run during
the day at the discount rate—will be run only when unused capacity exists.
New
Silos and Tape Drives Improve ATL Response Time
Recently two new automated tape libraries (ATLs)—often called "silos"—and
twelve tape drives have been added to the ATL on the MVS South system.
These automated units contain robotic arms that find, retrieve, and mount
tapes in less than 20 seconds—greatly improving tape processing.
Changes
to NBARS Software Coming This Fall
Both the ADSM client and server software for the NIH Backup and
Recovery Service will be upgraded later this year. With the reduction in
storage charges (plus a drop in charges in FY99), most users will see a
significant drop in costs for the NBARS service .
Significant
Rate Reductions for NBARS Coming October 1
Increased usage and upgrades to hardware and software enable CIT
to cut in half the charges for the NIH Backup and Recovery Service in fiscal
year 1998 .
FileAid
Price Raised by VendorLook for the Replacement July 1
Because of large vendor price increases, CIT will replace FileAid
with other software (MAX) that offers more features at a more reasonable
price. Beginning July 1, MAX will be available on both the North and South
systems, and FileAid will continue to be available until August 31.

Up for Year 2000 Test Facility via the Web
Users can see schedules for both the MVS North and the MVS South
systems and then submit a request for test time via a web form at http://silk.nih.gov/silk/year2000/test.htm.

Six enter commands retired on June 14, 1998. Web replacements
are now available for two of the facilities—Enter Training and Enter Eguide.
MVS North
All registered users of the MVS North system can now access the
RACF facility from the North system's webpage and issue RACF commands from
any browser. Web RACF provides an easy method for making MVS system security
more manageable .
Agency coordinators and RACF coordinators now have a web tool for
viewing and printing reports, as well as for managing account registration.
Only coordinators with a valid userid and password will be allowed to see
registration data for their agency code.
QWS3270 is a telnet application that allows a network-attached PC
(running Windows) to connect to an IBM MVS system in 3270 mode (TN3270).
QWS3270 PLUS—the robust, commercial version—is now available at no charge
to all registered users and can be downloaded from the North system webpage.
