  1. The December jobs numbers came out this morning. Unemployment stayed at 7.8% and the economy added just 155,000 jobs. November’s unemployment rate was actually revised up from 7.7% to 7.8%. To put the job creation rate into perspective:

“It would take 51 months to get to ‘full employment’ (6 percent) at a rate of 155k new jobs per month.” - Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Former Director of the Congressional Budget Office

Not exactly the four more years Americans were hoping for…
  2. Today, I officially announced the opening of my District Office in Wadsworth. I made the decision to move the office from Canton to a more centrally located area to make it accessible to as many people as possible. Here is the new contact information:

1 Park Center Drive, Suite 302
    Wadsworth, Ohio 44281
    Phone: (330) 334-0040
    Fax: (330) 334-0061
  3. In response to the President's decision to lift the federal pay freeze through an Executive Order, I will be introducing legislation to ensure Members of Congress and the Vice President do not receive a raise.
  4. I am back in Washington, DC this afternoon. As negotiations continue, it is important to remember that the House has twice passed bipartisan bills to extend all of the current tax rates and replace the sequester with targeted cuts. If our plan were to become law, we would not go over the “fiscal cliff.”
  5. I have received a large number of phone calls and emails asking for my position on the fiscal cliff. I want to take this opportunity to offer some insight and clarity into where I stand.

  6. Over the next several days my district office will be making the move from Canton – in the far southern end of the new 16th District – to Wadsworth, which is much more central. Our phones and computers in the new office will be down in the near term. If you have a question or problem with a federal agency, for the time being please call my Washington, DC office at (202) 225-3876. I will share our new contact information just as soon as I have it. It has always been my goal to provide top-notch constituent services, and I apologize for any inconvenience this move may cause. Thank you for your patience!
  7. The 2.3% excise tax on sales of medical devices is another fee within the President’s health care law. Because it is a tax on sales, not profit, it will hit our device manufacturers especially hard. Here’s an example from the article, which... I encourage you to read in its entirety: “To put this in perspective, imagine that you’re a manufacturer of medical devices and had a profit of $100,000 on sales of $1 million after all your costs and expenses—everything from materials and labor to research. The excise tax would be $23,000, wiping out almost a quarter of your profits.”See More
  8. Earlier today, I met with Robert Blomquist, Mayor of Olmsted Falls, as part of my continuing efforts to connect with elected officials in the new parts of the 16th District. I was also able to spend some time with Chief of Police Dan Gilles and Fire Chief Cornel Munteanu, as well as Kathi Lowery, Senior Director of the City. — in Olmsted Falls, OH.

  9. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families of the tragic and senseless act of violence that took place in Newtown, Connecticut earlier today. This is a terrible and heartbreaking incident.
  10. It is an honor to be appointed to the House Budget Committee, one of the most influential committees in Congress. Chairman Ryan is a master of the budget process and an innovative leader in the significant challenges we face in fixing Ameri...ca’s broken finances. As a businessman, I look forward to learning more about how the House develops its budget and to offering common sense solutions from the private sector on how we can begin to right our fiscal ship.See More
  11. Yet another reason why I have voted repeatedly to repeal the President’s health care law. This new fee is just the start. They will keep coming now that the regulatory agencies are digging their way through the 2,400 page law. More than 3,500 pages of rules have already been written.
  12. Last evening, I spoke on the Floor about the five members of the Ohio delegation who are leaving at the end of this Congress. It was an honor to work with each one of them.
  13. This makes sense because we aren’t already $16 trillion in debt and running yearly deficits of well over $1 trillion or anything.

  14. Meeting with Mayor Kevin Kennedy of North Olmstead. I also visited the fire department, toured the police station to meet with officers and toured city hall with the mayor’s staff.
