Volunteer Testimonial
Alyssa Bittenbender
Peace Corps Volunteer
Zambia, 2004-2006
My name is Alyssa Bittenbender. I’m a returned Peace Corps Volunteer from Zambia. I recently participated in Peace Corps Week, and I went to visit Appletree Institution ,which is a charter pre-school. And I spoke to a classroom of about 30 students about my Peace Corps experience.
My name is Alyssa, and I’m happy to see you guys this morning.
Peace Corps Week is a chance for returned volunteers to go out into their community and share their experience with others. This is part of the third goal, which is to promote a better understanding of different cultures from around the world within the United States.
So today we’re gonna talk about a country named Zambia. Has anyone ever heard of Zambia before?
[Student] Zambia.
Do you guys know where Zambia is?
[Student] Africa.
Yes! Good job!
With the children, I showed what a typical day in the Zambian village was like, and then we dressed up in traditional clothing and danced.
[Music playing, class dancing]
I had a great time. I would encourage every returned volunteer to go out to their community and share their experience with others.
