The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Vehicle Technologies Office manages several Energy Policy Act (EPAct) transportation regulatory activities that aim to reduce U.S. petroleum consumption by building a core market for alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs).

EPAct directed DOE to develop the Alternative Fuel Transportation Program to manage regulatory activities, including the State and Alternative Fuel Provider Fleet Program, which requires covered fleets to reduce petroleum consumption through one of two compliance methods.

KEY FEDERAL STATUTES

Excerpts from key federal statutes that helped shape EPAct transportation regulatory activities:

Energy Policy Act of 1992

Defined alternative fuels and required covered fleets to acquire a percentage of AFVs annually

Energy Conservation Reauthorization Act

Awarded covered fleets credits toward compliance based on biodiesel blend use

Energy Policy Act of 2005

Established method for covered fleets to reduce petroleum consumption in lieu of acquiring AFVs

Energy Independence and Security Act

Directed DOE to allocate credits for some electric drive vehicles through rulemaking underway

EPAct 1992 established two related activities not covered by this site: Sustainable Federal Fleets and Clean Cities.
