Research & Development

PHMSA sponsors Research & Development projects focused on providing near-term solutions that will increase the safety and reliability of the Nation's pipelines and Hazardous Materials transportation. Read below for more about how Hazardous Materials Safety and Pipeline Safety conducts R&D.

Hazardous Materials Safety
Research and Development (R&D) is an investment in shaping the future of an organization. An effective, efficient, and aggressive R&D strategic plan is necessary to focus on initiatives that produce the best return on investment. The Office of Hazardous Materials Safety's (OHMS) R&D program directs basic and applied research for the purpose of minimizing risks associated with the transportation of hazardous materials (HM).

Vision: Promote innovative approaches to support the safe commerce of hazardous materials for a multi-modal transportation system.

Mission: Provide research, analyses and technical information needed to manage the public risk associated with HM transportation.

Goal: The goal of the Office of Hazardous Materials Safety's Research & Development program is to develop and implement safety solutions that enhance the Agency's safety mission.
Pipeline Safety
PHMSA's Pipeline Safety R&D Program conducts and supports research to support regulatory and enforcement activities and to provide the technical and analytical foundation necessary for planning, evaluating, and implementing the pipeline safety program. This program is sponsoring research and development projects focused on providing near-term solutions that will increase the safety, cleanliness, and reliability of the nation's pipeline system.
