How ORISE is Making a Difference

ORISE Manages EMI SIG to Support Information Sharing Across the DOE Complex

The Emergency Management Issues Special Interest Group (EMI SIG), sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Emergency Management and Policy and advised by the DOE Office of Transportation, brings together emergency managers from across the DOE complex to share emergency management information.

Comprised of more than 1,000 DOE and DOE contractor emergency management personnel, EMI SIG shares information, lessons learned and resources across the DOE complex to ensure effectiveness and consistency in the areas of emergency preparedness, management and response.

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) manages EMI SIG on behalf of DOE and successfully plans and facilitates the annual EMI SIG conference, where the general membership convenes. In addition to managing the special interest group, ORISE created (among other products) a self-paced, computer-based tool for drill and exercise development called Exercise Builder, which contains steps for designing, developing and evaluating an emergency exercise.

The EMI SIG Steering Committee meets at least twice each year to plan activities for the special interest group and discuss emergency management issues of interest to DOE/National Nuclear Security Administration and its contractors.

EMI SIG subcommittees and working groups meet regularly to share information and develop products and resources that can be used by all EMI SIG members and others within DOE.
