Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program

Hematology / Oncology

This is a three year program that offers training in Hematology and Medical Oncology. At the end of the training period, fellows will be board eligible in both subspecialties. There are 4 fellows in each year group of the fellowship (12 total). Ten board-certified key clinical faculty members participate in the education and training of the fellows. There is heavy emphasis on clinical skills/direct patient care. As a tertiary care referral service, this program offers a broad Hematology and Oncology experience and is the only DoD training program to offer on site autologous and allogeneic bone marrow transplant services. In addition to having access to phase I research protocols at the Cancer Treatment Research Center (CTRC) of the University of Texas, we also are a participating member of the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) offering a variety of clinical trials for our patients.

Education

Our curriculum consists of informal bedside teaching from faculty during clinical inpatient rotations and outpatient clinics as well as formal didactics and simulation training. The formal didactic sessions occur twice weekly on Tuesday and Friday mornings. These sessions include a core lecture series, journal clubs, basic science lectures, morbidity and mortality conferences, and military unique education sessions. In addition, we have a fellow case conference, bone marrow transplant education seminars, and hematopathology microscope rounds. Our simulation training consists of a bone marrow biopsy cadaver lab, communication training with patient actors, and workshops for accessing PORT catheters, performing lumbar punctures, and the administration of intrathecal chemotherapy.
