Esty Statement on the 40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Jan 22, 2013
Press Release

Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) released the following statement regarding the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s historic decision in Roe v. Wade:

“Today marks a historic milestone that is both a cause for celebration and a call to action. Forty years ago, the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade recognized that a women’s right to make her own decisions about her reproductive health is the law of the land and protected under law.

“We’ve come a long way over the last forty years, but there is still so much to be done. Recent attempts to chip away at reproductive rights and women’s health in Washington and in state legislatures across the country give us cause to remain vigilant. We must defend against attempts both to turn back the clock on Roe v. Wade and stall the march toward greater equality and fairness for women. It is time women earn an equal wage to their male counterparts. It is time to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act. It is time to tackle the pandemic of domestic violence that costs the lives and well-being of far too many women across the country. It is time to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act. We can, and must, do more.

“On this historic anniversary, I’m grateful to all those who have worked so hard in the cause of truly equal rights and opportunities for all Americans. I’m hopeful that we are up to the task of moving our country forward. And, I’m as committed as ever to fighting to protect our most basic and fundamental rights.”
